Is it free to join?

Yes. Creating an account costs nothing, whichever role you pick, and there is no card required to sign up. You only pay for what you actually use: • Students pay per tutoring session at the tutor's own rate, and pay for individual resources or video lessons they choose to buy. Browsing, the community, free resources and your progress tools cost nothing. • Tutors pay a LearnCoin fee when they accept a session or list a video lesson — never a subscription, and never anything before they have work. • Contributors pay a LearnCoin listing fee only when they put a paid resource on sale. Nothing on the platform charges you on a recurring basis unless you deliberately choose a paid plan.

How do I create an account?

Confirm it and: • Students go straight into a short onboarding wizard (country, school, curriculum, level, subjects, learning goals) and land on their dashboard. • Tutors and contributors complete a profile — qualifications, subjects, experience, rates — and submit it for review. Pick your role carefully. It determines what your dashboard can do, and changing it later means contacting support.

Which curricula and education levels are supported?

The platform is built around Kenya's CBC — from primary through junior and senior secondary — and supports other major systems including British (IGCSE / A-Level), American (AP) and the IB Diploma, plus college and university-level subjects. Every subject, topic and subtopic lives in a curriculum tree that admins maintain, which is what lets a search for "Grade 10 Chemistry" return content actually written for that syllabus rather than anything with "chemistry" in the title. If your curriculum or level is missing, tell us — the taxonomy is admin-managed and new systems are added without a software release.

What device and internet connection do I need?

There is nothing to install. • Browsing, resources and the community work comfortably on a modest mobile connection. • Live video sessions are best on a stable connection with a working microphone; if video is struggling, the classroom's text chat and file sharing keep working, so the session does not have to end. • Downloaded resources are yours to keep and open offline once you have bought them.

Do I need a subscription?

No. The platform is pay-as-you-go by default — you book the sessions you want and buy the materials you want, and nothing bills you in between. Subscription plans exist for learners who want bundled access rather than one-off purchases. They are optional, and you can use the platform indefinitely without one.

What will it actually cost me as a student?

That is entirely in your hands, because every price is set by the person offering it. • Tutoring is priced at the tutor's hourly rate, prorated to the length you book. Sessions run from 15 minutes up to 4 hours, so a short check-in costs a fraction of a full lesson. • Resources and video lessons are priced individually by their creator, and the price is shown before you buy. • Free resources are marked as free and cost nothing. You always see the full price before you commit. Nothing on the platform charges you without showing you the figure first.

Can a parent set this up for their child?

Yes. Many younger learners are set up by a parent or guardian who handles the account, the payments and the choice of tutor. Parental controls let a guardian link to a learner's account, follow their progress and set spending limits so a child cannot buy beyond an agreed amount. If you are setting up for a child, use an email address you control for the account itself — that is where booking confirmations and receipts arrive.

What are the different roles, and what can each one do?

You hold exactly one role, chosen at sign-up: • Student — books sessions, buys and downloads resources and video lessons, joins communities, tracks progress, earns XP and badges. • Tutor — everything a student can do, plus: publish a tutor profile, set an hourly rate and availability, accept bookings, teach in the classroom, upload video lessons and resources, and withdraw earnings. • Contributor — uploads and sells learning resources, writes blog posts, and withdraws earnings. Contributors do not teach live sessions. • Moderator / Admin — internal roles that review content, approve tutors and contributors, and run the platform. Roles are not stacked: a tutor account is not also a contributor account, though tutors can upload materials as part of their own role.

Question 12

Why does my tutor or contributor account need approval?

Because students trust what they find here, and that trust has to be earned before anyone is listed, not after. When you submit your profile it enters a review queue. An admin checks your qualifications, experience, subjects and how you describe your teaching or your materials. Until that review clears, you can complete your profile and change your details, but you cannot appear in search, accept bookings or list anything for sale. You are told by email and in-app the moment a decision is made. If something is missing, the rejection explains what to fix — you can update and resubmit.

How long does approval take?

Usually a couple of working days, and faster when your profile is complete on the first submission. What slows a review down is almost always the same handful of things: a bio of one line, qualifications with no institution or year, no subjects selected, or an hourly rate left at zero. A profile that answers the reviewer's questions before they ask them clears quickest. While you wait you will see an "account under review" screen instead of the dashboard. That is normal and not a sign anything is wrong.

What happens if my application is rejected?

You keep your account and you are told why. A rejection is normally about evidence, not ability — unverifiable qualifications, a profile too thin to assess, or subjects outside what your background supports. Fix what the note asks for and submit again; there is no limit on resubmissions and no fee. If you believe a decision was wrong, reply to the notification or email support with the details.

Can I change my role later — student to tutor, for example?

Not from the settings screen, because a role change moves your account into a different permission set and, for tutors and contributors, into a review queue. Contact support with what you want to change and why. For a student moving to tutor or contributor, expect to complete the same profile and review that a new applicant does.

I did not receive my verification email. What now?

Accepted Answer

Check your spam or promotions folder first — that is where it is nine times out of ten. If it is genuinely missing, sign in and use Resend verification on the prompt shown at the top of your account. Verification links expire after a while, so an old email may simply have timed out; the resent one is fresh. Still nothing? Email support with the address you registered with, in case there is a typo in it.

Question 17

How do I keep my account secure?

Three things do most of the work: • Turn on two-factor authentication in Settings. It means a stolen password alone is not enough to sign in as you. • Use a password you use nowhere else. Reused passwords are the most common way accounts are lost. • Never share a login. If someone else needs access — a parent, for instance — link accounts through parental controls rather than handing over a password. Sign-ins are logged, so if something looks wrong, support can tell you when and from where your account was accessed.

How do I delete my account?

Settings → Delete account. You are asked to confirm, because it is not reversible. A few things survive deletion, and it is fairer to say so plainly: financial records of completed transactions are retained because we are required to keep them, and content you contributed to shared spaces — community answers others have built on, for instance — may remain with your name removed. If you have an unpaid balance or an open withdrawal, settle it before deleting.

What are LearnCoins?

LearnCoins (LC) are the platform's internal credit. You top up once and then spend coins on platform charges instantly, without going through a payment prompt every single time. 1 LearnCoin = KES 10. The rate is fixed at the moment of every transaction and recorded on it, so a change to the rate in future never re-prices something you already paid for. Coins exist because of how often small charges happen. A tutor accepting four sessions in an evening should not have to complete four M-Pesa prompts; a student buying a set of past papers should not wait on an STK push per file. You buy credit once, and everything after that is a balance check.

What can I spend LearnCoins on?

Coins pay for the platform's own charges — never for a person's fee directly: • Tutors spend coins to accept a booking. The fee is 20% of that session's price. • Contributors and tutors spend coins to list a paid resource or a paid video lesson. • Students spend coins to buy resources and video lessons in the marketplace. Coins are never required to browse, to join a community, to ask a question, to track your progress or to download something that is free.

How do I buy LearnCoins?

Go to LearnCoins in your dashboard, choose a package or enter your own amount, and pay by M-Pesa. An STK push arrives on your phone; enter your PIN and the coins land in your balance as soon as the payment confirms — usually seconds. The starting packages are: • Starter — 50 LC for KES 500 • Tutor — 100 LC + 5 bonus for KES 1,000 • Pro — 250 LC + 20 bonus for KES 2,500 • Academy — 500 LC + 50 bonus for KES 5,000 You can also top up a custom amount, up to a single-transaction ceiling of 25,000 LC. The KES amount is always worked out on our side from the coins you asked for — never sent up from your browser.

I paid by M-Pesa but my coins have not appeared. What do I do?

Give it a minute and refresh — the confirmation comes back from M-Pesa, and occasionally it takes a moment longer than the SMS does. If it still has not credited: • Check LearnCoins → Top-up history. A top-up sitting at *pending* is still in flight; one marked *failed* was never charged. • Do not repeat the payment. Every top-up carries a unique reference, and a confirmation that arrives twice credits once — but a second, separate payment is a second purchase. • If the M-Pesa SMS says you were debited and the top-up is not *completed* after a few minutes, email support with the M-Pesa code.

Do LearnCoins expire?

No. Coins you have bought stay in your balance until you spend them. There is no monthly decay and no dormancy charge. The one thing that does expire is a bonus promotion — a free-coin offer has a claim window, and once it closes you can no longer claim it. Coins already claimed from it are yours and behave like any others.

Can I convert LearnCoins back into money?

Only coins you earned from sales — not coins you bought. Every balance has two parts. Coins bought with M-Pesa are spending credit and are one-way: they pay platform fees and nothing else. Coins earned when someone buys your resource or lesson are convertible, and those can be turned into KES. The split is not bureaucracy for its own sake. A credit that can be bought with cash and then cashed straight back out is a money-laundering route, and treating it as one would drag every user into identity checks nobody signed up for. Keeping purchased coins one-way keeps the platform simple for everyone and costs you nothing you actually wanted — you bought them to spend. To convert: LearnCoins → Convert, minimum 100 LC. The coins leave your balance immediately so they cannot be spent twice while the request is open, an admin reviews it, and on approval the KES lands in your wallet ready to withdraw. If a request is rejected, the coins come straight back.

How is the tutor acceptance fee calculated?

20% of the session price, converted to coins at KES 10 per coin. A worked example: you charge KES 300 an hour and a student books 2 hours. The session price is KES 600, the fee is 20% = KES 120, so accepting costs 12 LearnCoins. Two details that matter: • The fee is calculated from the price the student booked at, not your current rate. Raising your rate afterwards never raises the fee on a booking already made. • Fees are exact to a fraction of a coin. A 90-minute session at KES 250/hr is KES 375, and the fee is 7.5 LC — not 8. Nothing is rounded up against you. You always see the exact fee and your balance before you press Accept.

Question 26

What happens to my acceptance fee if the session is cancelled?

It depends on who cancelled. • The student cancels, or an admin intervenes — your fee is refunded to your coin balance. A session you lost through no fault of your own should not leave you out of pocket. • You cancel — the fee is forfeited. The fee is what makes an acceptance a commitment; if walking away were free, an accepted booking would not mean anything to the student relying on it. Refunds appear in your coin history as their own entry, so you can always see exactly what came back and why.

What if I do not have enough coins to accept a booking?

The Accept button tells you exactly how many coins you need, what your balance is and the shortfall, and links you straight to top-up. The booking is not lost while you top up — it stays pending until you accept it or it is cancelled. That said, students do book elsewhere while they wait, so keeping a working balance is the practical move. Many tutors top up enough for a week of sessions at a time.

When one applies to you, a banner appears on your dashboard with the amount and the deadline. Click once to claim; the coins are added immediately. Each promotion can be claimed once per account, ever. Clicking twice, or refreshing mid-claim, credits you once — not twice, and never zero.

Are LearnCoin purchases refundable?

Coin purchases are not refundable to M-Pesa. They are prepaid credit, and the credit is delivered the moment the payment confirms. What is refundable is a fee: acceptance fees come back when a session is cancelled by the student or an admin, and listing fees come back when a submission is rejected by moderation. Those refunds are returned as coins, into the same balance they came from. If you were charged in error — a duplicate payment, a top-up that credited twice — contact support with the M-Pesa code. Genuine errors are corrected.

Where can I see everything my coins were spent on?

The history is append-only — entries are never edited or deleted. A correction appears as its own new entry rather than a quiet change to an old one, so the record you saw last month is the record you will see next year.

Every tutor in those results has already been reviewed and approved — there is no unvetted listing to sift out. Each profile shows their qualifications, years of experience, subjects, teaching approach, hourly rate, average rating and reviews from students who actually sat sessions with them. A practical tip: book a short session first. Sessions can be as brief as 15 minutes, which makes a low-cost trial the cheapest way to find out whether someone explains things the way you learn.

How do I book a session?

From a tutor's profile, pick a subject and topic, choose a slot from their availability, and set how long you want — anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours, in 5-minute steps. The price is worked out from their hourly rate and the length you chose, and shown before you confirm. Your request goes to the tutor, who accepts or declines; you are notified either way, and the session appears under Sessions. Booking requests only fit slots the tutor is actually free for — you cannot accidentally double-book someone.

What happens once a tutor accepts my booking?

A private classroom opens for the two of you immediately — you do not wait for the start time to use it. Use it beforehand to share the question you are stuck on, a photo of your homework or a past paper, so the tutor arrives already knowing what you need. At the session time, the video call starts inside the same room. Afterwards the classroom stays readable. Your chat history, the files you both shared and the tutor's session notes remain there for you to go back to.

Can I cancel or reschedule a session?

Yes — open the session under Sessions and cancel it. The tutor is notified straight away, and if they had already paid their acceptance fee, it is returned to them. Cancel as early as you can. A tutor has held that slot for you and turned other bookings away for it, and late cancellations are the one thing that reliably costs you good tutors' goodwill. To reschedule, cancel and book the new slot.

What can I buy in the marketplace?

Two kinds of thing, both created by approved tutors and contributors and checked by moderators before they appear: • Resources — notes, summaries, past papers, marking schemes, practice questions, revision guides and worksheets. You download them and keep them. • Video lessons — recorded lessons with chapters, which you watch in your library and which remember where you got to. Everything is tagged by curriculum, level, subject and topic, so you can filter to exactly your syllabus. Plenty of items are free; paid ones show their price in LearnCoins before you buy.

Do I keep what I buy forever?

Yes, once the session is complete — and reviews can only be left by a student who actually sat the session, which is what makes tutor ratings on this platform worth reading. Your rating feeds the tutor's average shown in search. Be honest and be specific: "explained the working step by step" helps the next student far more than five stars on their own.

How much can I earn as a tutor?

You set your own hourly rate, and there is no cap on how much you teach. The economics per session are straightforward: • You pay 20% of the session price in LearnCoins to accept the booking. • When the session is completed, 85% of the session price is credited to your KES wallet — the platform's commission is 15%. On top of live teaching, you can sell video lessons and learning resources in the marketplace, where you keep 70% of each sale. Those keep earning long after the recording is made, which is what turns tutoring here into more than an hourly wage.

How do I set my availability?

Set your weekly recurring hours in your tutor profile, and block out specific dates when something comes up. Open the request under Sessions and press Accept. The acceptance fee — 20% of the session price — is taken from your LearnCoin balance instantly. No phone prompt, no PIN, no waiting. The exact fee, your current balance and what will be left are all shown before you confirm. If your balance is short, you are told the shortfall and sent to top up. Accepting opens the classroom immediately, so you can message the student and see what they need before the session starts.

Why do tutors pay a fee to accept a session?

Because it is what makes an acceptance mean something. On platforms where accepting is free, tutors accept everything and cancel what they cannot fit — and the student, who arranged their evening around it, absorbs the cost. A small commitment fee changes that: you accept what you will actually teach. It also keeps the marketplace clean at the other end. Fees fund moderation, the classroom, payment processing and support, and because the fee scales with the session price, a short cheap session carries a small fee rather than a flat charge that would make brief sessions not worth taking. And you are not exposed to someone else's change of mind: if the student cancels, your fee comes back.

When do I get paid for a session?

One good lesson sells indefinitely — it is recorded once and it does not need you present again.

Can I teach students outside Kenya?

Yes. Sessions are online, and the platform is curriculum-aware rather than country-locked, so a tutor comfortable with IGCSE or IB can take students wherever they are. Set your timezone correctly in your profile — availability is shown to each student in their own local time, and a wrong timezone is the single most common cause of a missed session.

From your dashboard: Upload resource. Give it a title and description, tag it to a curriculum, level, subject and topic, upload the file, and set a price — or mark it free. Submit it, and a moderator reviews it before it goes on sale. Review is about quality and accuracy: correct answers, legible scans, content that matches the syllabus it claims, and material that is genuinely yours to sell. Once approved it appears in the marketplace and can be bought by any student.

How much do contributors earn per sale?

70% of every sale. The platform's commission is 30%, and it covers hosting, delivery, moderation, payment processing and putting your work in front of students. Earnings arrive as convertible LearnCoins — the kind that can be turned into KES and withdrawn (minimum 100 LC per conversion). There is no cap and no exclusivity clause on the number of items you list or what you earn from them.

Why is there a listing fee, and how much is it?

Listing a paid resource costs LearnCoins up front — for resources, an amount equal to the price you set; for video lessons, 20% of the price. It exists to keep the marketplace worth browsing. A marketplace with free listing fills with low-effort uploads priced hopefully, and students stop trusting the search results — which costs the serious creators far more than a listing fee ever does. Because you keep 70% of each sale, a resource priced sensibly repays its listing fee inside the first two sales and is pure earnings after that. Free resources cost nothing to list. If moderation rejects your submission, the fee is refunded to your coin balance. You are only charged for something that goes on sale.

Material tied to something a student is under pressure about: • Past papers with worked marking schemes — the working is what people pay for, not the questions. • Topic summaries for the parts everyone finds hard, rather than a whole-syllabus overview. • Practice question banks with full solutions. • Exam-season revision guides, listed well before the exam rather than during it. Tag precisely. Most sales come from a student filtering to their exact level and topic, and a resource tagged loosely is a resource that never appears in that filter.
